Bonsai Citrus

The Citrus bonsai tree is also known as the Orange tree. One of the major attractions of growing a citrus tree is that you will be able to see and grow small oranges. These look particularly attractive during the summer months. First the tree will flower during the late spring or summer time before the orange fruits begin appearing. Traditionally you want to grow this bonsai tree in the informal and upright styles. If you are living in Europe or North America then it will be particularly difficult to find one of these bonsai trees however those of you living in Asia will not find this much of a problem.

During the summer months you will want to water your citrus tree quite heavily. However during the winter period you will meet need to do this much less and will only be required to keep the soil slightly damp. Keep in mind that you must avoid water clogging your tree. You will notice that your trees leaves will begin to drop off if an overwatering problem is present. Other smaller problems include scale insects but they can easily be removed with a simple spray of insecticide.

The best period of time to fertilise the plant is during the summer period just when the fruits have started to display. As the plant is native to the Mediterranean basin it ideally grows in warm and dry climates. During the winter months, keep the tree indoors when the temp drops below 5°C, however the trees can enjoy a strong amount of sun during the summer months.

If you're looking to trim this tree you will need to do this during the summer and spring period. What you must look out for however, are any flowering buds as you do not want to cut these off. To do this you can use your thumb and forefinger if they are nimble enough, or you can use a pair of small scissors. You must also remember to remove any remaining fruits at the end of the year just before the winter occurs.

The repotting of this tree is quite easy to do and should be done every approximately 3 years or so. The best period to do this repotting is just before growing season so this is early springtime. After you have made the repotting remember to apply plenty of high nitrogen fertilizer. The ideal conditions for this trees soil are when it is slightly acidic.
