Bonsai Cypress Tree

The bonsai cypress tree is an outdoor coniferous style of bonsai that’s evergreen, so it’s beautiful to look at all year round, even in the winter months. It’s this style of bonsai tree that is commonly seen in oriental paintings and other works of art.

The cypress tree also known as “Chamaecyparis” is very lush and originally comes from Japan. It’s fast growth makes it quite a useful plant for beginner bonsai owners to start their training on. It displays a brown bark with a slight red tint which is complemented by it's light green foliage from its needles.  There are also special blue, golden forms are also available.

The best time of year to repot these trees is during late spring and it’s a good idea to do this every other year or so as the trees grow quite quickly. After the repotting you should apply a high-nitrogen fertilizer to help enhance the tree during the growing season.

Scale insects are one of the major pests that seem to irritate this tree. They’re not too difficult to move individually if you notice them, but if they turn into a more persistent pest then it’s a good idea to bring out the insecticide. Also don’t fret if some of the needles start turning brown during the autumn period. This is perfectly natural as the tree is just shedding some of its old needles. You can aid this process but cutting some of these needles, but the most important thing is to not panic and realize it is part of the tree’s natural growth.

During the summer period the cypress tree should be watered regularly and much less frequently so during the winter months. It’s a good idea to keep soil in which it is growing fairly moist. When shaping the plant with any wires it’s best to do this from early spring to late autumn. This wiring should only be kept on for about three quarters of the year.

The pruning and trimming of the plant needs to be done quite frequently. You’ll need to pinch and twist out any new undesirable growths around three or four times per growing season. If you’re cutting off any major branches then it’s best to do this during the spring time. What’s great fun about this plant is that you can really style and play around with the foliage. Using a pair of cutters you can end up with some fantastic looking forms and shapes, it just takes a bit of pruning to achieve. In fact it’s a great plant for practicing your pruning and trimming on, so if you’re a newbie it’s a good tree to start out with.

If you’re looking for a high quality cypress specimen then you can try importing the plant from Japan but you’ll be required to obtain a license. You can also normally find them in local garden stores.  Also if you live in an environment that causes frost during the winter then you’ll want to cover the tree with some form of protection or move it indoors. However, it’s much easier to maintain it in the summer as it can be left outside in the full sunlight.
