Bonsai Fertilizer

The fertilizer that you give your bonsai tree is like the food that you give a human being. It helps it to grow and prosper into a tall thick beautiful tree that is healthy and will live many years. The problem with bonsai tree growing is that you can only apply a small amount of fertilizer since the tree is restricted to a small pot but at the same time you still want it to grow a very thick trunk and branches.

In addition to this problem, the bonsai tree is often pruned a large amount and shaped in many different ways which stresses the tree. Even more strain occurs on the tree when it flowers or bears fruit. Therefore whilst the tree is limited in size and should not be given too much fertilizer, it still needs a healthy amount because of all the stress it is put under.

Striking the right balance between too much fertilizer and too little is something that is mastered over the years because too much fertilizer can be just as harmful as too little fertilizer.

The best form of fertilizer available is natural compost such as manure which can be spread over the surface of your bonsai trees soil. Other natural composts developed such as those from rotted vegetables can also be used. If you have not got access to any natural fertilizer then one which is made up of potassium, nitrogen and phosphate is what you need to look out for when buying an artificial fertilizer. If the leaves on your bonsai tree are turning yellow, this suggests that your bonsai is lacking the correct amount of nitrogen but you must first think about eliminating other possible problems as well.

There are two types of artificial fertilizer that you can purchase: liquid fertilizers and solid fertilizers. Generally, liquid fertilizers can be applied fastest and the results will be seen most quickly whereas solid fertilizers take slightly longer boot time.

The best time to apply your fertilizer is just when the buds are appearing so this is during the early springtime. When you do apply the fertilizer, make sure this is done during days which are not too hot in direct sunlight and are not too rainy as the water will wash away any fertilizer you apply. Weaker fertilizers are generally applied every week or so whereas is the strongest fertilizers should only be applied every two weeks or so. A further additional point to mention is that you should not apply fertilizer if the soil is too dry so a slight watering might be required before the fertilizer is applied.
