Bonsai Styles

There are a wild variety of ways in which you can grow your bonsai trees. When you're thinking about choosing a style for your bonsai tree is important to reflect upon the natural style that your species grows in the wild. For example, redwood trees do not bend very easily and should normally be grown in an upright formal position. Also, you should decide what size of bonsai tree it is going to be. Very small bonsai trees, medium bonsai trees and large bonsai trees all have different challenges that must be overcome in different ways.

Generally, there appear to be five main styles of bonsai tree growing. There is the cascading style, the semi-cascade, the slanting look, the formal upright to look and also that the informal upright style. For both the formal upright and informal upright positions, the trees lower branches are normally slanted towards the grounds. The difference between formal and informal upright positions is that with a formal position on the trunk is growing straight and vertical in a very rigid format whereas with the informal position the tree slightly slumps to the left or to the right.

The slanting style bonsai tree is similar to the informal upright position however it is more exaggerated. With the slanting style, usually all the trees branches will be growing in one direction however the trees lowest branch should be grown in the opposite direction and is often purposefully grown extra long.

The semi-cascading style is when the trunk is grown horizontally and often reaches far outwards from the side of the pot or bowl. The cascading style is similar to this except instead of just growing outwards or sideways, the tree is also purposefully grown downwards using wire so it’s trunk is beneath the level of the bowl of the plant.

These are the five basic groupings and ways of growing your bonsai tree but there are other minor formations which you can adapt your tree to. Other styles include the coiled bonsai tree where the tree's trunk is purposefully wired and bent in on itself so that it is bending round and round in a circle.

There is the windswept look where the tree is grown in one direction and all of its branches and leaves are also grown in that similar direction making it look as if it has been constantly blown by the wind. There are many different ways in which you can grow your bonsai tree over rocks. There is also the ability to have your bonsai trees trunk split. And also not to forget the exposed style bonsai tree where the tree's trunk has been purposefully burnt or stripped off during some areas of its growth. Then of course there are group formations which have many different variations and can be grown in a wide array of patterns.
