Bonsai Tree History
Many people regard Bonsai Tree growing as a Japanese past time when it is in fact originally from China and began in their country almost over 2000 years ago. The Chinese also have a tradition of growing ceramic pots and it is no surprise that the two art forms were brought together and were combined into an even more powerful form of beauty. Nowadays any good quality bonsai tree also grows in also grows in a good quality pot.
Unfortunately for the Chinese the Communists regarded bonsai tree growing as a bourgeious past-time and activity and so it was almost eliminated during the communist revolutions. This is why people from the West consider bonsai tree growing as a Japanese past-time because no such destruction of bonsai occurred after World War 2 for the Japanese.
The Japanese have only been growing bonsai trees for a thousand years or so compared with the two thousand years of Chinese experience. They combine it with Zen Buddhism and it’s quite common for many monks and religious persons to practice the art of bonsai tree growing. If you look at the differences between the bonsai trees in the two countries you should notice quite a change, although this did not always used to be the case.
Americans were first introduced to the art of Bonsai tree growing after World War Two when they were occupying Japan. When they returned home, some servicemen began practicing what they had seen in and the bonsai tree movement began growing in their own country. From American, bonsai tree growing was then slowly exported to the rest of the world. Bonsai tree growing is now practised in pretty much every part of the world and there is no area, continent or country in which there is not at least one bonsai owner growing a tree.
Just as the Chinese have the own style and the Japanese began to grow their own styles now every country around the world seems to have a distinct style and flavour of growing its own bonsai trees. Each nation seems to interpret the art of growing bonsai trees in a different way. This is one of the reasons why bonsai tree growing is such as fascinating art form. Just as artists from different countries work in different ways, so do bonsai tree growers from different countries.
